Day 1Quito - Tren “Ruta de los Volcanes” - Machachi

Early in the morning, a guide and driver will pick us up from our hotel. The adventure begins in Chimbacalle train station, from where we depart southwards to the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”. The railway will pass among some flanks, such as: Pichincha, Atacazo, Pasochoa, the Viudita, Rumiñahui volcanoes. The road descends through the “jungles of Panzaleo” whence wood for building the churches of Quito came from, through grasslands, croplands and haciendas. In Tambillo and Machachi we’ll enjoy the cuisine and culture of the chagras, the Ecuadorian cowboys. In El Boliche, at the foothills of Cotopaxi, we discover its singular flora and fauna in an easy trek, then return to Machachi for lunch and a visit to “Granja La Estación”, a beautifully kept farm home of native and exotic animals. Overnight (-,L,-)

Day 2Cotobike/ Afternoon travel to Riobamba

You will be driven by a private transport towards the Cotopaxi National Park, this natural reserve lies at the foot of the world’s highest active snow-capped volcano (5897 m.). This is an exciting day that begins with spectacular views of the unique Andean Landscape in the Volcanoes Avenue. On clear days you have the most incredible views up here. The weather of Cotopaxi is unpredictable so we recommend bringing warm clothing with you. Enjoy the incredible picture opportunities and the spectacular scenery at walls of ice and deep crevasses. Once inside the National Park we hike up to the refugee that is located at 4800 m, in here we are going to have a little rest to refill our energy. Once done with this we will hike a little more till we reach for the glaciers, a total altitude of 5000m. On our way back we are going to stop again at the refugee to have our deserved lunch. We will continue our way into the park and stop at the Limpiopungo Lake at 3800 mts., here we can make an acclimatizing walk while observing semi-wild horses, a variety of ducks and hummingbirds and the Andean gull and lapwing. We will return to the parking lot and take our way to Riobamba. Overnight (B,L,-)

Day 3Tren del Hielo I

Today, we will have a new train experience. The adventure begins in Riobamba, a typical Andean city located in the Ecuadorian Central Andes. A clear day view is breathtaking: Capac Urcu volcano rises above the horizon with its five-peak crowned summit; witnesses of a past eruption a thousand years ago. The Majestic Chimborazo – Ecuador´s highest peak and the closest point to the sun from the center of the Earth, – rises northbound. As we move north, if we are lucky, the shy Carihuairazo volcano might appear amidst the fog from time to time. Once at Urbina station we meet Baltazar Ushca, the man who braves low temperatures and high altitude to harvest ice from the bowels of Taita (father) Chimborazo. Tourists from every corner of the world come here to learn about this ancient trade while enjoying ice-creams prepared with this very same ice and blackberry juice. Just before we depart to Riobamba, we pay a visit to La Moya. The descendants of the ancient Puruha people await for us to share their once secret daily live in the Andes and enjoy a typical lunch in the moor of Chimborazo volcano. Overnight (B,L,-)
