Ecuador has been named as Green World Destination by the World Travel Awards in Doha (Qatar) in 2015.
The Galapagos Islands, were declared as Natural Heritage for Humanity in 1978 by UNESCO Galapagos also has been renowned because Charles Darwin started with the research of the specie’s evolution in the islands.
Quito was the Leader destination of South-America in 2015, according to the World Travel Awards. The Capital of Ecuador, Quito, was named as the first Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November, 1978, by UNESCO, for its natural, geographic, architectural and cultural features. It has also its own Nickname(s): Luz de América (Light of America), Carita de Dios (God’s Face), Ciudad de los Cielos (City of the heavens).
In 2015, Quito´s International Airport Mariscal Sucre won as the Leading South America Airport in the World Travel Awards.
The Historic Centre of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Trust site, due its historical buildings in 1999. Between 2013 and 2014 Cuenca has also gotten three international recognitions, like the Jean Paul-L’Allier, On November 19th., which is given by the OCPM, as a touristic incentive each two years, for cities which are executing conservation and heritage valorization works. This way Cuenca has done the Barranco’s intervention project, the Mother’s Square, the Universidad of Cuenca recovering and the bike path in the shore of the Tomebamba’s River.
